Acute cystitis is  often referred as bladder infection while the infection of the upper urinary tract or kidney is called as pyelonephritis and is more serious than the former one.

Bacterias causing Urinary Tract Infections

80-85% of bladder infections are caused by a pathogen called E.coli or Escherichia Coli and 5-10% of UTI are infected by a bacteria called Staphylococcus. These bacterias when got into the urinary tract they try to bind to the epithelium of the the urinary tract but they are easily eliminated by micturition (discharge of urine). But if there is any problems or wounds in the epithelium due to external factors like urinary catheter, the above mentioned bacterias can easily invade and cause infections in the epithelial cells.
